10 Amazing Products That Your Conscience Can Feel Good About
Today I’m excited to share ten of my favorite cruelty free products with you! Lately I’ve tried to make a conscious effort to purchase products that have not been tested on animals as well as leaving a smaller carbon footprint. I think to some people this sounds intimidating and expensive. I’m one of those people that decides to do something and it’s an all-or-nothing, cold turkey kind of decision. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn’t. In the case of switching out personal and household products to cruelty free or all natural, I think it’s okay to do it gradually, otherwise you end up wasting products and money. I’ve also noticed, at least personally, there’s a lot of pressure to be 100% vegan or cruelty free or vegetarian or or or or…
Guys. Let’s be real for a minute. A huge lifestyle change like that is HARD! It’s okay to make small changes gradually. It’s okay to have vegetarian dinners 6 days a week and something with meat once a week. You have to do what works for you and every little bit helps.
Anyway, let’s get into it! Here are 10 of my favorite cruelty free products!
I can’t say enough about this face scrub. If you like a face wash that doesn’t dry your skin out and actually leaves your face feeling fresh and clean, this is the stuff for you! I use this on my face twice a day and I really can’t think of a time where it has dried out my face, which is awesome for an exfoliating product.
I sweat. A lot. And lots of sweat usually comes with odor. When I say I’ve tried just about every deodorant out there, I mean it. Up until last week I had just resorted to using men’s deodorant (shout out to my sweet husband for not complaining about me sharing with him). A few days ago I decided to go on a hunt for a deodorant that was aluminum free, didn’t irritate my skin, and kept the odor at bay. After hours of research and reading reviews, I decided to buy a travel size SmartyPits to see how it worked. You. Guys. This stuff is amazing! Not only does it smell great, but *I* smell great! I’m still a little sweaty because it’s not an anti-perspirant, which is because there isn’t any aluminum in it. This formula is thick, but it goes on smoothly and doesn’t irritate my underarms like other deodorants I tried that contained baking soda.
This is a magical stick. I’m serious. I originally bought this just because it was a cloth diaper safe rash ointment but even after I decided to stop using cloth diapers I continued to use this on my kids. My oldest daughter had a really awful rash one time that was bleeding and super painful so I used this on her poor bottom and by the time I changed her next diaper the rash was 96.2% gone. It was amazing. I think we’re on our third stick now and I will continue to buy it. It smells good enough to eat, but don’t. Don’t eat it. It goes on butts, guys. And I know from an anesthesia-induced stupor that it has no flavor.
I love red lipstick. For a few years before I had kids it was my go-to color. Now, not so much because tiny hands and lipstick don’t mix that well. However, this is my new favorite lipstick. I have Scarlett Letter and it’s such a gorgeous color. After I’m done writing this post I’m ordering some other colors for sure. I wore Scarlett Letter to church on Sunday and it goes on so smoothly that when I caught a glimpse of myself in a mirror it took me by surprise because my lips felt like I had nothing on them. I’m a little obsessed with matte lip color at the moment and Flower knew what they were doing with this stuff.
With three kids under the age of three I don’t have time to contour and highlight and and and and…
Not only does this cheek gel go on smoothly, you only have to use a teeeeeny bit to get a natural blush going and you can layer it for more color as well! It also doubles as a natural looking lip stain for when you want that no-makeup look. I really love this blush and use it even on days I don’t wear makeup to just give myself a little color.
6. Pixi Shea Butter Lip Balm
Hi, Pixi! Just currently obsessed at the moment! This lip balm is everything. EveryTHANG. Smooth like butter, pigmented, smells yummy, too! Natural Rose is my jam! It doesn’t look like much based on the tube, but it’s a gorgeous color! This goes on like a simple lip balm and you honestly will forget you’re even wearing it because it’s so light and creamy. I think the pink one will be my next itty bitty treat to myself next time I’m at Target getting three million diapers and wipes in my yoga pants.
When it comes to my face I’m a little bit of a clean freak. I don’t like people to touch it, I don’t like heavy formulas on it, and I wash it every morning and night. I bought this witch hazel toner originally to make uh…postpartum healing pads. There, I said it. It is what it is. But I ended up not needing them after having Birdie, which was nothing short of a miracle and after I got home from the hospital I tried this out on my face and I’ve been sold ever since. Lavender is one of my favortire smells in the world, behind food trucks, clean babies, pools, and freshly bleached loads of laundry straight from the dryer. Thayers makes this toner as soothing as they come and I just adore the vintage-esque label.
Anyone who knows me also knows that when my hair is the perfect shade of pastel is when I feel “myself” the most. I’ve tried just about every brand of vegan and cruelty free hair dyes and Arctic Fox is by far my favorite. I recently dyed it Aquamarine and it was the most gorgeous aqua blue mermaid hair color. It was so vibrant that it took me by surprise because I normally do pastel but it’s such a gorgeous color and I totally embraced it. I think today marks about a week with this color. I’ve washed it every other day since then and it’s still bright and fresh looking! I even went swimming yesterday with my kids and it’s neither green nor faded a bit. I think one of my favorite things about any bright hair color is the ability to blend colors and create your own look. But that’s the failed art school student in me I think.
Remember how I said I was in love with lavender? Yeah, wasn’t lying. This aromatherapy spray is a combo of lavender and lemon and I’m pretty sure it’s what heaven smells like. This is sucha bright and cheerful scent that my kids and I named it “happy spray” and I’m very liberal with it when everyone needs a little chilling out session (which is quite often). And the best part? You can spray it on YOURSELF. Yep. You, too, can smell like the little slice of heaven that you are. Go ahead, rejoice!
Anyone out there with a sensitive scalp, raise your hand. Mine is raised as high as it will go because my scalp is so incredibly sensitive that just using most shampoos even one time will give me scabs on my scalp. Its gross and painful and so itchy. Cue this amazing shampoo and conditioner. Lavender, obviously, but it also comes in great scents like coconut and ylang ylang, murumuru butter and rose, tea tree oil and vetiver, coconut water and mimosa flower, and shea butter and sandalwood. I love how this shampoo doesn’t smell artificial because of the real lavender oil in it.
These were listed in no particular order, simply because I don’t have a favorite and they’re all such good, quality products. As I continue to transition to more cruelty free products, I’ll consider doing another post about them if anyone is interested in that. Just remember, it’s not about going cold turkey and making your life more difficult by trying to adhere to someone else’s standards about how you should be living. It’s about changing your lifestyle and the world one little thing at a time.
